Scaredy Cat?
by Cheri
It is sometime before midnight as I do a final check of my EMail and put a few things on my desk away. The rest of the house is dark and sleeping. The house windows are all open; cool srping breezes wafting in; birds chirping.
My office is in the middle of the house. My bedroom where dh is sleeping is through the music room, kitchen, and then a small den. The kids are through a hall outside my office door, past the living room, and then down another hall.
There was a series of tremendous crashes as if someone had emptied a large trash can onto a ceramic tiled floor. I jump. Someone is in the house. Maybe they are in my son's room and knocked over the nintendo stuff. The house had become eerily quiet then.
I grab my scissors holding them at my side with the point forward and began walking quietly through the house. I've seen enough movies to know better than shouting out, "who's there?" No way was I going to light a candle. I hesitate by the living room...should i expose myself by going through the lighted kitchen to awaken dh? I decide not and crept toward the blackened hallway.
My body tense, palms a little damp. I enter the hallway toward my kids' rooms and the noise.
Something shoots out of the dark straight at me. I move my scissors forward and scream. It went back into the shadows and into my 11 year old son's room. I chase after it slapping the wall with the palm of my hand turning on the hall's light.
I stand in the hallway, eyes like a crazy woman, frantic, searching, scissors poised to strike, and listening. Four kids are sort of sitting up enquiringly. It was at that moment I saw the cat. Stuck in a paper bag. Climbing my son's bunk bed. Banging into the wall. Scaring me to death. Stupid Cat. I turn off the light and told the kids to go back to sleep. I did not however, stop to help the cat before going to bed myself.
The next morning my kids thought the whole thing was hilarious....yeh, very funny...mom chasing a cat with a pair of scissors...ha ha ha.
